Peperomia

How-to care
for your Peperomia

Overview

Peperomias are tropical plants native to Mexico, South America, and the West Indies. With over 1000 known species, these plants come in thick, fleshy leaves.

It can be difficult to differentiate between one Peperomia species to another. They can look completely different: some with heart shaped leaves, others almond or oval shaped. Their leaves can be green, marbled or striped — even grey or red.

However, some things that all Peperomia plants have in common are that they are slow-growing, can be planted all year long, and are low maintenance.

Peperomia is also known as Baby rubber plant, radiator plant or shining bush plant.

Care Tips

     Care Level

Peperomias are a great plant for beginners. They can be forgiving and withstand some amount of neglect.

     Lighting

Medium to bright indirect sunlight. Can tolerate low-light as well. Direct sunlight can be avoided as it can burn the leaves.

Discoloured or dropping leaves are usually a sign of inadequate light or excessive watering.

     Humidity

As tropical plants, peperomia plants prefer a warm and steamy environment. Especially during the summer, you may want to place it on a tray of pebbles and water to increase humidity levels.

The plant, however, can tolerate dry air, although high humidity is recommended.

     Other fun facts:

Some types of leaves have fascinating patterns. For example, the watermelon peperomia has patterns that look like watermelon skin. Others have deep veins, stripes, variegated blotchy patterns, or plain shiny green colours.
